Spring Break Adventures

We headed to California on an airplane to visit family over spring break, and it was exactly what the title suggests...an adventure. Momma toating two little ones on an airplane with carseats, diaper bags, backpacks (toys for the kiddos), and a stroller...equation for a stressed out me.

Once we arrive in Orange County, all the stress was removed and we were ready for the vacation part. We headed to Disneyland for three days. Lily was the happiest little girl in the world when she saw Minnie Mouse...need to get the pic from my mom. Garrett could have rode the Buzz Light Year ride all day. I enjoyed the churros, they are the best.

After Disney we just visited with family for the week, and got in some quality time. Such a great memory. I know daddy missed his little ones, and is so happy to have us home:)

A New Life Out West

Since we moved from California to Colorado in October, time has rapidly been passing by. In six months, we seen the seasons change from autum stained leaves of the Front Range to the white covered snow caps of December. Change is good, and necessary in some cases. This change has given me a chance to reflect on all areas of my life and decide where other change is needed. I've been propelled to overcome fear that has drained the opportunity for adventure and progress.

Now that the snow is melted (although I'm sure we will get a few more storms) I can see the golden fields turn to green, and feel the sharp sting of winter wind turn to soft somber breeze. Spring is a chance to dust off those winter blues and homesick slumber to rise and remember the joy that is all around. What brings you true joy? Is it the sensation of the sun filling your soul, a good novel, the the laughter of little ones playing outside? Focusing on what brings us true, simple, honest joy is what my spring is all about.

Well it doesn't take much for my heart strings to be touched and after hearing this song and enjoying a extra long weekend with all of my family, except Shelli and Robert which was the only downer of the weekend! So Sarah and I rock, paper, scissored for the clean up job of Lily tonight after dinner! She decided hot dogs and hamburgers was boring and that we needed after dinner entertainment. She put the hot dog down her shirt, make-up (ketchup) on and her hat (paperplate) on her head and proceeded to entertain us. THANK YOU LILY FOR THE LAUGH!!!

Being Self Reliant

Last year we had a nice little garden that wasn't much to look at, but this year I might have let my ambition take over! We have a wonderful garden with, zucchini, crook-neck and patti-pan squash, cucumbers, bell-peppers, honey-dew and seedless watermelon, Garrett's corn, 4 different types of tomatoes (6 plants), yellow baby bell-peppers, habanero and jalapeño peppers, sweet-butter lettuce, cilantro, chives and basil. WOW we are enjoying everything and are being blessed with a great harvest with allot more to come. Most importantly, Lily and Garrett really like the garden and go out every day to see if we have something new to pick, which has been a great lesson in self-reliance for them. We will keep you posted on how we finish the summer! Hope everyone is doing well!

Lake Naci

Thank you first to our good friends, Doug and Joddy, we were able to spend a beautiful out at Lake Nacimiento. It was Lily's first time on a boat but she was such a trooper.

Garrett loved the tube and most certainly his favorite part was when Doug let him drive the boat. That little guy is such a nut for motorize equipment!

We look forward to a few more trips out to the lake this summer!

Aaron is the coach and loves spending that time with Garrett...when he is actually participating in the game and not walking off second base during a run because his "power was out". I've never seen anything more cute than watching Garrett play tball.

Last week, before Lily came down with RSV we were able to go to the park. It was such a beautiful, sunny day. Garrett rode his bike with his friends, Eva and Logan. Then we had a picnic. I'm so looking forward to more bright sunny days with the ones I love most!

I am setting in an airport in Nashville, TN on my first leg trying to get home this morning! Its 2:38am in CA and all that is on my mind is Sarah. Today is 7 years since I made the best decision of my life and although the road has been rough at times its been worth the drive. Words do not describe the happiness and joy that Sarah and I have found together.

Now with Garrett and Lily it is a wonder why Heavenly father seems to bless us so much. Traveling as much as I do, my appreciation for Sarah as a wife and a mother has grown to a new level. What she handles while I am gone makes her a supermom and wife in my eyes!

I am getting on my plane right now but Just wanted to say to my sweetheart that "Your my best friend" and I love you more than you will ever know!

New Moon

My friend Alissa's husband Ben organized a Girls Night Out for her birthday on the opening night of NEW MOON. It was a blast he got a limo and went to the midnight showing at the Fremont Theater in San Luis Obispo. We met at Alissa's house before hand and did spa treatments and had dessert, it was such a blast. Alissa did this New Moon raffle and Joddy won an Edward doll (she is holding it in every picture), I was super jealous. Maybe she will be interested in joint custody. We laughed in the theater at all the crazy fans, like the guy who showed up dressed like Edward with glitter all over his face and hands. I have so much fun, thanks for the great night!

Garrett (4 years)

Garrett has been say some pretty funny thing lately, so funny I had to share it with you. He is really cleaver and Aaron and I are still trying to figure out how comes up some of his sayings.

Tonight, Aaron and I were discussing cars and which car to purchase and Garrett chimes in to say:

"You get what you get, and don't have a fit"

Hilarious!

Last Sunday Garrett insisted that he carry this old book around all day, and when we asked him why he was so interested the vintage book, he replied

"I reading the book about Jesus"

In the Primary Program the children will be performing on Sunday, Garrett was given a part. Scary. When it was his turn to go up to the stand and practice. Here is what happened...

Teacher: (whispering) Garrett, say "my body is a temple".
Garrett: (into the microphone) My body is a temple, and it makes me feel good
Where did that come from? Talk about random!

We have been talking about Thanksgiving this week, and I asked Garrett what he was thankful for, he said "My mommy and daddy". Awwww.

Lily (13 months)

Lily is walking and is following her brother all over the house. I gave her pig tales for the first time the other day, so cute! She loves to play with Garrett's trucks and cars, her kitchen and loves to eat sand.

Everything she finds around the house, she puts on her head. Daddy's sock...it's a hat, Tupperware container...it's a hat, dish towel...it's a hat. It never ends, everything's a hat. Even in the picture above, she is probably thinking to herself "Hmmm, wonder if this pumpkin could be a hat?"

These are the moments that I stand back and feel and overwhelmed with blessing that I have these adorable little ones in my life. They are my greatest blessing, they bring so much joy and happiness into my life. I'm truly thankful for my family!

Las Vegas PBR and Happy Birthday

The family and I went to the PBR Finals in Las Vegas last week, we had a great time. We ate at great restaurants, swam in the pool, and did some major shopping (as much as you can do with two kids). Being that all we have here is Target, I practically had a nervous breakdown walking through the mall. So many options, so many stores. We were thankful that we could go the PBR at night, wouldn't have been able to without my mom helping us out!

So many great memories...got to ride in a limo, got front row seats at the big event, went to a pre-party at the Hard Rock Hotel, met up with my friend Joddy to shop at H & M, and most of all got to celebrate Aaron's 30th birthday!! Thank you Smith Family for making Aaron feel so special on his birthday, we loved the party!

Here are few pics of the kids at Halloween this year. Lily was the cutest little ladybug and Garrett was Mr. Incredible! Garrett had a Harvest Festivel at his school this year, that is where he got the cool Spiderman face paint.

Lily was so cute in her costume, we pulled the kids around the neighborhood in the wagon. Garrett loves running to each house, he said he wished everyday was Halloween. He is still asking me if we can go Treat or Treating. Too cute!!

Blue Sky Pumpkin Patch

Tour d'Pumpkin Patch, Lily's mommy and me class met at the pumpkin patch today. This pumpkin patch is a smaller scale than Avila Barn, it has a petting zoo area and a hunted house, nice family that operates it. It's a working ranch, so it is less touristy and more rugged. Of course I had to dress the little ones up!

p.s. made this fabric flowers for Lily's hair, to die for, more to post on these cute things!

Super Saturday

Last weekend I helped coordinate a Super Saturday (i.e., big craft day). We had great food and crafts, tons of people showed up so that made it even more fun. It was so tired after the festivities, but it was well worth it to see all the cute crafts we got to accomplish, well, at least start. I did the tile pendent class and loved how they turned out, gave one to mom and one to grandma for watching the kids for only 6 HOURS...whoa, they deserve more than just a necklace let me tell you.

I hosted the family tree project, which I got the instructions from my friends website, just click on the family tree link below for full instructions.

I made one of the aprons, and didn't get to finish it, so I sent it home with mom. No kids=more time to craft.

I also did the fabric pumpkins, but instead I used apple fabric and make into an apple not a pumpkin for Christmas presents for the kids teachers.

Avila Valley Barn

Last week when my grandparents and mom came into town, I wanted to share with them my favorite fall activity The Avila Valley Barn. It was so much fun taking Garrett on a hay ride, collecting fresh apples and picking up so many pumpkins I thought the stroller would bust (thanks to Garrett, Garrett, pumpkin picker). The corn maze was there this year, that was really fun for Garrett, he is still taking about how much fun we had!

I love me a good fair. While Aaron was gone, the kids and I packed up and headed over to visit the Smith Family. We had a fun filled weekend with taking the kids to the fair, and to Disney Princess on Ice. Disney on Ice was awesome! I think Mandi and I enjoyed even better than the kids.

There is something about the fair that I love. Sometimes when I step back I think "wow, this place is really cheesy, but I love it!" Fair food, winning a big stuffed animal, riding the giant slide, elephant rides, and a bunch of kids running around having crazy fun, how can you not say that is cool!

WY Resident

Ok, if you have talked to Sarah recently you would know that I have been gone for the past 2+ weeks. I recently gained my residency in WY after spending two weeks hunting in Glenrock. This is an annual trip that was a little long the normal due to a management antelope hunt that we sponsored along with Zeiss optics and Barnes bullets. I spent most of my time freezing to death with average tempuratures in the teen's.

It was allot of fun though, not that I enjoy being away from my family but we had a great time and was able to take some excellent animals. It will be nice to get back home and enjoy my little ones as well as spend some quality time with Sarah.

I have found a new love. The Tastee-Freez Cherry Diet Pepsi. It is amazingly refreshing and even they put the cherry flavoring in the beverage. It really doesn't get much better than that. I figure since it's my only vice, it's not so bad. Or maybe since I'm blogging about my Diet Pepsi, I should consider a recovery support group.

Monday: Menu Planning

On Mondays I usually plan the meals for the week and do all the big grocery shopping. I make little trips throughout the week to pick up fresh fruit and veggies.

Even though it's still 100 degrees outside, I'm getting too excited for fall cooking. I love to cook and bake. Comfort food is my specialty. Here is the menu for the week.

p.s. Thank you grocery bagger for helping us load the car, you are awesome. I didn't even ask, and he said "I know how hard it is to grocery shop with kids, let me help you with your groceries". WOW, what a nice kid. I think I will call the store to tell the manager how impressed I was.

Lily's First Day at Mommy and Me

Ever since Garrett was a year old I've took him to the Mommy and Me program with the Atascadero School District. It is the cutest thing ever. They have credentialed teachers that engage you and your little ones with crafts, story time, free play and singing. It has been an amazing experience with Garrett, and since he graduated last year, we are now taking Lily. Here are some pictures of her first day!

Morro Bay Harbor Cruise

Aaron and I went on a harbor cruise hosted by my employer on Saturday night. It was a blast we just coasted the Morro Bay Harbor, ate an amazing dinner and danced the night away. It was so beautiful seeing the sun set, watching fishermaen show us their big catch of the day and watching the sea otters swim around. Thank you for a great night Manderley!

Bow-tastic and a New Tooth

Now that Garrett is in preschool, I sometimes get a few hours of FREE TIME, to craft. I had Mindy, one of the sweetest people in the world over and we crafted it up. Here are some of our projects! I made the "O" for Olivia bow organizer for her daughters birthday! My sister-in-law made one for Lily and I just love it.

Lily also wanted to show you her new top tooth, pretty nice, huh! Now if the little cutie could sleep through the night!

Monterey Bay Aquarium

We decided to take the new Volvo for a road trip up to Monterey Bay to visit the aquarium. I was only a hour and 45 minute drive! We had a blast, it was one of the best days I've had. The kids loved it, and behaved surprisingly well for having no naps! We went to Bubba Gumps for dinner afterward, and sat looking over the bay. The food was awesome, Aaron had crab stuffed shrimp and my mom and I had coconut shrimp. It was a great day!
p.s. I love how in the family pic, Garrett is picking his nose and Lily is looking away...the we had no idea!

Garrett's Pirate Party

Garrett turned FOUR on September 8th! He is such a big boy, and we are so proud of him. He had a great time with close family and friends. I really had too much fun planning his party. Pirate bags made of of burlap, a bean bay toss, pirate cake, island kabobs, it was a blast. It was almost 100 degrees outside, so we made it a water slide party. The kids loved it. Thank you for all your help with the party (you know who you are!) Happy Birthday Baby Boy We Love You!!

Garrett's First Day of Preschool

It was Garrett's first day of Preschool and he was so excited. He looked so cute and wore the biggest smile of his face as he walked into the classroom. First, he hesitated at the door, took a good look around at all the kids playing with toys, playdough set-up on the tables, and smiling teachers eager to meet him, then Garrett said "bye mommy" and went off to play with the other kids. Aaron and I were so proud of him and what a smart and sweet boy he is growing into.

After we left, I wasn't sure what to do with my self. It was just me and the baby with three hours to just do whatever. I went to Walmart, walk around aimlessly, and confussed. Is this really me having a relaxing shopping trip? I just wasn't sure what to do with myself. Go get a pedicure (which I need despertly), go to Ross (new fav store latley), go get paint to paint the house...the possibilities were endless. Instead, I went home, put Lily down for a nap, sat on the couch, ate breakfast and enjoyed a peaceful house.

The tradition continues

So at the ripe old age of 4 (well almost 4, 3 years and 11 months) Dad decided to pass on a heritage that has run through my family for more then 2 centuries to me. Hunting, we made our trek into the mountains of Tehachapi to find venison. Believe it or not we were successful and I even helped get the deer out of the mountains. I have been told the quote goes "Daddy, I will just drag a leg"

Hunting in my family, is a tradition that is as rich and vibrant as the pioneers trek west. So much in fact that we (Dad, Papa and I) still make annual trips together. I think its probably 75% of the conversations we have and I even live it with my career. (Just living the dream)

Well I am not about to let this tradition and heritage go by the wayside. Garrett knows very well what Daddy does for a living and has even gone on a turkey hunt with me this past spring.

With deer season in full swing and my pursuit already started on a really good buck here in Paso, Garrett has ventured out with me once before yesterday evening. He loves to go, whats even more funny is having him spot deer, he finds allot more then I can see. HAHA

Anyway, he was asleep when I pulled the trigger but as soon as the gun went bang, he woke up and yelled, "daddy you got him!" He experienced the full hunt, from pictures to field dressing and even getting home at 11pm. He has been officially inducted into the brotherhood and he loves every minute of it!

I can't wait til he is the one shooting and I get to watch!

Glass Creek Camp Trip

It is a tradition in Aaron's family to camp at Glass Creek near Mammoth each year. We've figured out that this was my sixth time going. It is remote, rustic, and primitive, but serene and peaceful at the same time. Aaron's family has been going to this spot for over 40 years. We had a great time bonding, hiking, four wheeling, and just hanging out and laughing. It was fun and sad to leave. After being away from home for over two weeks we were happy to come home. Thank you Smith's for a fun trip!

We were able to attend my family reunion on my grandmother's side (Eide's) in South Lake Tahoe. We had such a great time seeing family we haven't seen in years. My cousin Mae that I used to live in SLO with when we were in college was there with her two kids, I havn't see her in over seven years. There was lots of chip eating (Emily my chip partner in crime), swimming in the lake with the kids, kayaking, BBQing, boat riding, and just catching up. It was a magical vacation. Can't wait to see everyone again!

We had a great time visiting my family in Southern California. It was so nice to spend time with family. We spent almost the entire time in the pool and eating mom's yummy food. It was a great 4th! I have to mention that Aaron went to the new Bass Pro Shop THREE times! It is an awesome store, you have to see it to appreciate it. The kids did great on the way home, which contributed to a great visit.

I'm saying da-da, following my big brother everywhere. I love Cherrios, peas and toast. My favorite toy is my piano or my brother's trucks. I love swimming and swinging. My mommy says I'm not a great sleeper...I tend to wake her up a lot at night. My hair is growing in curly and blonde. And just last week, I got two bottom teeth!

Can you see Garrett swimming with his teacher Julia? He did a great job a swim lessons last week. We are so proud of Garrett's new water abilities. He can hold he breath underwater for like 10 seconds and can doggie paddle, a very short distance. Garrett is a little fish and loves the water, just like his mommy.

I know this might seem a little cheesy but, for the past several days I have been away from the house, entertaining a guest of Weatherby. It goes without saying that Sarah is the love of my life and undoubtedly the most amazing individual I know. The love she shows to me, our children and every individual she comes in contact with is truly a Christlike attribute. I can't express how much she truly means to me! I can't fully imagine where my life would be without her, but I do know it would most certainly have not been in a good directions. She is my beacon of light in a dark tunnel, coaching me through.

Garrett is still potty training, and I have to ask him like 40 times a day if he has to go potty. He usually says no, but when he really does need to go he says "so, what do I get?" I usually say, a piece of candy or a sticker. Then he will proceed with the negotiation.

Happy Birthday and Mother's Day

We had a fun-filled weekend celebrating my birthday and Mother's Day. It started off on Thursday going to SLO for some family pictures and enjoying the Farmer's Market. We purchased all our fresh fruits and vegetables for the week at the market and was able to have Firestone's...my favorite! If you haven't eaten at Firestone's you should add it to your "top 10 places to visit in my lifetime" list.

Friday, my birthday, we spent the day just doing errands and then went to another favorite restaurant, Giuseppe's in Pismo Beach with some friends.

Saturday, we headed up to San Simeon State Park and took the family camping. After we set-up camp we drove about 17 miles up Hwy 1 to the Salmon Creek Trail Head, just passed Ragged Point. We hiked to a waterfall that was so beautiful. Lily was in her carrier and Garrett was on daddy's shoulders. We also stopped by to see the elephant seals, thousands of them laying out on the beach. Afterward, we went back to camp and roasted marshmallows and watched Garrett climb trees and dance to Jack Johnson, he is so silly.

The next morning we hiked over to the beach and the boys though rocks while the girls took pictures. Then drive north to the San Simeon State Beach and had a picnic and played in the sand and water with the kiddos.

It was a perfect weekend. Happy Mother's Day to all the mommies out there!

6 months

Lily turned six months on the 20th and can't believe my baby is growing so fast. I wanted to note some of Lily traits as a memento:
-She loves to watch me cook dinner while hanging out in her Bumbo chair
-Loves to crawl around the living room and stick whatever she can find in her mouth
-She prefers a pitch black room while sleeping
-Loves her binky, no LOVES her binky
-When she is sitting down, you can count 5 rolls on her cute belly
-Hates the baby swing
-Loves to hold on to something while sleeping (toy, blanket, rail of the crib, or whatever she can get her hands on)
-Thinks her brother is the funniest person alive.
-Loves the beach!

At night (the only time I can actually think) I'm so amazed to think I have a daughter. I feel like I'm a better person having her. I want to show her a good example of how to be a daughter of God, humble and loving.

She is such an easy baby and is just so happy to be part of the family. Aaron and I marvel at what a sweet child she is and how well the dynamic between Garrett and her has been. Garrett today said that Lily was his best friend. I hope they will continue to be close and always look to each other for support and guidance. They are my light and my life and our greatest blessing!

Ice Blocking

For our Young Women/Young Men's activity at church the youth did ice blocking tonight at one of the elementary schools in town. The kids had so much fun sliding down the hillside on a big block of ice. They had a rope frozen into the ice block and would put a towel on it and take off. It was so funny to watch, I have never seen such a sport. You can tell the kids had a great time from all their smiles!

I fleeted off to San Simeon State Beach today to get out of the 98 degrees heat of No. County, and it was 85 degrees at the beach! It was so hot I had to take several dunks in the ocean just to cool off. Devin and her kids came with us, all five of the kids had a BLAST. The boys dug holes and chased sea gulls for over three hours. It was a beautiful day and needless to say Garrett and Lily crashed at 7 p.m. tonight (early for my kids).

It is days like this that remind me why I live here in the Central Coast. I love the weather and recreational opportunities. The natural beauty the resides in this country is hard to match. I truly feel blessed to be here. Now if I just could get some family in the area, it would be perfect! April and Jacob need to come back too!

While I was cooking dinner, Aaron and Garrett found a little lost baby sparrow by the lilac tree in the backyard. We found his nest on our roof, but it was way too high for us to reach up and put him back. So, we put him in a little birdie basket and set him up in the lilac tree and his mommy came and got him and put him back in the nest! We were so worried that he wouldn't find his momma, I even was Google-ing "how to take care of a baby bird".

Garrett was so sad, he really wanted to keep him and take care of him. He was so gentle and sweet with the little bird. He petted him and told him that he would find his momma. Garrett has such a big heart for animals...and reptiles....and rodents too! Oh dear!

Easter Blessings

We were pretty sick on Easter (that is why there are NO pictures of me...I looked pretty scary), but my brother and wife Michelle and my niece Claire came down with my mom to celebrate the holiday. We had a yummy Easter dinner on Saturday and was able to have a little hunt for the kids in the backyard. Aaron went to church to represent the family while we all stayed home and kept our germs to ourselves.

We are thankful for our Savior and for his sacrifice, so that we too can live with our Father in Heaven again.

Loaded Potatoes

I had to share this recipe with you, it is truly amazing. Coupled with the BBQ Chicken and big butter leaf Italian salad, I just can't get it out of my mind.

Loaded Potatoes

4 Large Baker Potatoes
1 cup sour cream
1/2 cup softened butter (the real stuff)
1/4 cup chopped green onion
2 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
1/4 cup whole milk or half-and-half
1/2 cup crumbled bacon (cooked)-optional
salt and pepper to taste

Heat oven to 400 degrees. Bake potatoes for 1 hour in oven, then remove and cut in half, long ways. Scoop out inside of potato leaving the skins to form a bowl for later. In a large mixing mash potatoes with milk. Then in the same mixing bowl combine sour cream, butter green onion 1 1/2 cups of the shredded cheese, bacon, salt and pepper. Scoop the contents back into the potato skin halves. Top with remainder of shredded cheese and place in oven for 15 minutes. Then turn oven on to broil and cook for 5 minutes until golden.

You can sprinkle chopped green onion on the top for presentation. This is a dish you will not forget!

Serves 6-8

These are a few of my best friends from college Alison and Anna. They're the best friends you could ask for. Alison and I quickly become friends when we were set-up to be roommates in college. We had so much in common including: matching Civics, crazy cats, a love for shopping and cooking. Anna and I met while we were hostesses at a restaurant in downtown SLO and instantly became friends. We've all been through a lot together and there still my favorite home skillets.

Alison and Anna live in Santa Cruz now and I don't get to see them as often as I'd like, but when we all get together it is like we're 19 again. This last weekend the girls, and Alison's baby Caden, came down and we stayed up until 2 a.m. talking, watching Twilight, shopping downtown SLO and cooked some amazing meals. We had a fun girls weekend, and I can't wait until the next!

The last two weekends we have been hard at work landscaping our backyard. Aaron brought in three truck loads of mulch and I planted various bushes and vines. We even built a vegetable garden and stocked it with tomato plants, bell peepers, basil, mint and parsley. I can't believe how much more time we are spending in our backyard since the improvements. It is finally a place we can enjoy. We are making plans to build patio covers next month, since our back yard is south facing and it gets extremely hot and sunny. Kids that come over even say "it's too sunny back there, I want inside". We have also justified the expense by how much the patio covers will cool the house in the summer. Since the cover will block out the sun it should reduce energy associated costs.

While we were planting Garrett found this worm and said he wanted to keep it as a pet. He put in the vegetable garden for safe keeping. That was the compromise, since he wanted to keep it in the house.

I have learned that with two kids I have to be more organized in the menu planning and shopping department. I really don't like taking the kids to the grocery store, it equals chaos. Buckets

I rarely blog about my husband, we are not the outwardly affectionate type, but we love each other and our kids a whole heck-of-a lot. Anyone that knows Aaron and I, knows how polar opposite we are. I'm from a large city in Southern California, he is from a small town 40 miles from a Target. There were 500 in my graduating class from high school, their were 100 in his. I was democrat, emphasize was, and he is a conservative republican. I was vegetarian*, he's an avid hunter. I fell in love with Aaron because of his strong sense of values, hard work ethic and his intense honesty for the way he felt about me. We just celebrated our six year anniversary last month, and I wouldn't be grateful if I didn't express how thankful I am to have met Aaron and thus married him and had his cute babies.

I'm truly grateful to have found Aaron and also almost equally grateful for the introduction to the tri tip! The last two weeks the kids and I were sick and Aaron tended to us by running to the grocery store, helping with laundry and rocking our crying baby girl in the middle of the night. Aaron is a strong man that would do anything for his family. I truly believe home is where our buckets get filled with confidence, love, understanding and praise. And as the mom the family I'm making it a priory to fill up some buckets!

*For the record, I'm no longer a vegetarian, but I refuse to cook with the latest hunted animal he brings home. It just kinda makes me ill.

Photography 101

So I've always been interested in photography. It started at a young age, assisting for my Aunt while I was in high school. My aunt is a professional photographer, so she would take me along with her and I would have so much fun helping with poses, meeting new people, and going on location to Laguna Beach for the perfect sunset shot. After I went to college I took a Photography 101 class, this was before digital cameras, while at least before they were mass marketed to the general consumer. I learned to develop pictures in a lab, just the basics of photography. I was also the photography editor for my college newspaper. I would get all the images "photo ready" for print. So much has changed since my college days, now with the digital boom, a whole new world in photography is born. A world I'm unfamiliar to.

These last couple weeks I have been inspired by many of my friends and their blogs to get interested in learning more about photography. I have a Nikon D40 and it takes great pictures. All I have to do is set it to automatic and fire away, but it really isn't enough to get really great shots just keeping the camera in the 'auto' setting'. So it is my goal to learn more and get caught up with technology.

This last weekend , I took the camera in the backyard and used my dog Koda as my test dummy. Surprisingly, he in less of a moving target than Garrett, hence why I choose the family dog. I switched around aperture, and the shutter speeds. All to find out who little I really know about all the above mentioned things.

So, I called my friend Kiwi, who has been studying the art for a couple years now and had gotten really good. She coached me through it. I realized this is going to be a long learning process. So, I downloaded the latest version of Photoshop and it all came back to me with in minutes...good news!

Then I got a call on Friday from a friend of mine, who heard I had a fancy camera, and wanted me to take pictures of her sons wedding reception the next day. First I thought, "I'm not really ready for such an important event, like a wedding reception, I don't even know what an aperture is!", then I assured myself, "you got to start somewhere, right?". So, needless to say I took a crash coarse in photography Friday afternoon, studying photography websites, practicing on the dog, and calling Kiwi with all my frustrations (thanks again!). I finally figured out what the heck the aperture is and where the function is on my camera, honed in on my Photoshop skills and viola I was ready for the photo shoot.

I will share with you the Photograpghy tips that I learn as I'm studying the art, I say art, beacuse literally it is a skill that takes years to master. I'm not one who is good with instructions, I prefer the 'learn by doing' philosophy, so I'm sure to have quite a bit of trial and error.

Little Monkeys

My Aunt Terri is an amazing photographer, TK Jones Photography, and while we are down in Southern California visiting my family she took some cute photos of the kids...well at least of Lily. The picture of Garrett and Lily is actually my favorite. She is looking at Garrett in either fear, or the realization that he is crazy. Meanwhile, for at least this photo, Garrett is seeming to be the 'perfect little angel'. I love my little monkeys!

Lily's 5 months

I really can't believe that my sweet little baby is already five months. She is such a blessing to have around the house, she is always smiling and laughing at her brother. We just started her on rice cereal, and has 10 percent end up in her mouth and the rest all over the bib.

The kids are I have been sick and stuck at home for a whole week and we are going crazy. Lily has RSV and Garrett and I have viral infections. Oh and to top it off with a cherry, both the kids have eye infections. So, back to being stuck in the house. I decided to make baby food for Lily today. Spent all morning cooking carrots and pureeing them, them making homemade apple sauce to last us the next three months. I was inspired by my friend Alison, who makes all her baby food. We are excited to get to start enjoying spring, planting flowers, going on long walks, and visiting the Colorado River at the end of this week.

Lily's Check-up and an Elevator

Yesterday Lily had her 4-month check-up and here are the stats:

14 pounds-56 percentile
25 inches long-85 percentile

She got four shots and woke up this morning with a 101 degree temperature, and has been a little wicked-ee (our work for fussy).

After her appointment I thought it would be lovely to take the kids to the library on a rainy day. Garrett could play with the toys and check out the fresh water aquarium, and I could pick-up a new read.

We meet a really nice grandma there with her grandson, and Garrett and him really played nicely together. It was turning out as planned...a lovely afternoon. Then we went to get in line and Garrett took off running toward the tall bookcases, while I'm in line with Lily (in her massive car seat), my fully equipped diaper bag and books in hand. So really how am I to run after him, and I can't yell out to him, I'm at a library. So, I briskly walk over the the crowds of snuggled up readers to find my son running away, again, from me while I say to myself "when I catch him, I'm going to spank his little butt".

Luckily, I run into a sweet, nonjudgmental friend, who saves me. She watches Lily so I can go run after Garrett. Then he is lost, no where to be found. I search the bathrooms, every isle, the children's area. I start to panic, heart racing, palms sweating, panic. "What if someone takes him", "What if he runs out to the street". I walk out the library to find two double doors that led to the City Hall (in the same building, just different offices), then there it was an elevator. I yell Garrett's name, and hear a small, but high pitched little voice shout back at me "Mommy, help I'm over here"....oh yes, inside the elevator, where else.

All safe, all accounted for.

It make me feel a little better today what one of my friends got kicked out of the library today for her child running around!

Valentine's Snow Day
